Revisiting Energy Efficiency of Metal Roofing: With NEW COOL COLORS

The Benefits of Energy Efficient Metal Roofing – Thanks to the Metal Roofing Alliance

As reported by the Cool Metal Roofing Coalition and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, installation of reflective metal roofing can save your home up to 40% in summer cooling energy costs while highly emissive metal roofs can reduce urban air temperatures by as much as 12 ° F. Combined, these benefits mean less money out of your wallet, less dependence on energy resources and less general air pollution in your neighborhood and across the nation.

While asphalt traps heat… Metal Roofs reflect solar energy… And pigments re-emit heat.

The secret to metal roofing’s energy savings is in its variety of finishes. As shown above, the basic, unpainted metal roof will reflect much of the solar radiation usually absorbed in your attic and home by an asphalt roof. But, for homes in warmer climates, pre-painted or granular coated metal roofing systems not only reflect solar energy but also cool your home by re-emitting most of what solar radiation is absorbed. Where annual cooling loads dominate, a highly reflective and highly emissive painted or granular-coated metal roof is optimal for reducing energy consumption and can actually re-emit up to 90% of absorbed solar radiation.

Metal Roofing: A Must Have for Historic Homes

historical metal roofStanding seam metal roofing is a great compliment to historic buildings in the Greater Philadelphia area.  Many of the historic homes and farms were originally built with a metal roof, and it is only logical to replace it with one.

This allows the homeowner to keep the beloved historic look from the past, while still implementing a present day functionality.  Standing seam metal roofs are offered in a wide variety of colors that can be the perfect accent to a historical home.  In certain cases, historic buildings are required to install a new metal roof to preserve the traditional look.

Regardless of the reason, it is easy to see the beauty that is added to a home with a metal roof.  Standing seam metal roofs have lasted on homes for 50+ years, and with the new technology upgrades it isn’t unreasonable to expect your roof to last even longer!!

Not only do metal roofs look great, there have great benefits, including up to $1500 in tax credits.  These roofs are also energy efficient and lower heating and cooling costs, which are important factors for older homes.   Not only is metal roofing Energy Star Certified, it is also 100% recyclable after its 50 year lifespan.

If you have a historic home in PA, NJ or DE call Global Home Improvement for a FREE estimate.

Metal Roofing <3 Thin Film Solar 4 Ever

Standing seam metal roofing and thin film solar are in love, and they didn’t need match.com. They knew from the start they were meant to be, and their relationship is nothing short of joyful.

Why?

Because it’s the best kind of relationship, of course. It’s mutually beneficial.

Metal roofing does the grunt work. It keeps water out, keeps energy in… and looks ruggedly handsome doing so. Thin-film solar lays around and soaks up the rays, yes, but it’s a worker too, assisting the metal roof with drastically reduced energy costs and a general sense of efficiency.

Okay, that was some silly stuff. You know what? Someone else described the perfect relationship between metal and solar a lot better. You might as well check that out:

There are also step by step pictures of exactly how the thin-film solar is added and how the panels attach to the roof. The article is a bit older though; it mentions an outdated $500 tax credit. Current metal + solar projects are eligible for larger tax breaks (up to 30% on both the metal and solar portion with no cap!!) Call 888-234-2929 for a FREE Estimate!

Standing Seam Metal Roofs: Head and Shoulders Above the Rest

We talk a lot about standing seam metal roofs here at Green is Global, and with good reason. They’re the greenest roofing option available for homeowners today (other than putting a garden on your roof), with high energy-efficiency and an exceeding long life-span. Also they look great! But let’s look at the unique technology behind this exciting alternative to drab shingles?

Standing seam means exactly what it sounds like: the roof has raised seams where each custom-fabricated metal panel connects. This is aesthetically and geometrically pleasing, sure, but there’s more than meets the eye.

The seams are gone over with a mechanical seamer (some contractors still use a crimping tool but the best – including Global Home Improvement go mechanical) which bends the seam twice. The first go-around will produce a 90 degree seam while the second one bends the 90 degree seam up under itself for a 180 degree seam-joint between the two panels.

Now you’re thinking, “Why is that a big deal?” I know, it sounds a bit underwhelming but just think about it. A 180 degree seam ensures your roof to be completely watertight, as it’s a protected seam raised above the roofs water-drainage points. This means water will never, ever reach any of the fasteners or clips under the metal, thus ensuring a long-lasting and rewarding life span.

Also, since each roofing panel is custom fabricated at the job site, panel length is not an issue. So you also don’t need to worry about water slipping through horizontal seams in the roof because… there aren’t any! Pretty cool, huh? Call 888-234-2929 for your FREE ESTIMATE!

Do You Know The Metal Man?

The Metal Man Multi-Panel Roofing Machine to be precise! He’s pretty hard to miss with his bright red exterior and heavy-set stance. You still don’t know him? The two-ton guy with the big rolls of metal on his back? Hmm. I guess I’ll tell you about him.

The Metal Man is a state-of-the-art roll forming machine that can pump out customizable metal roofing panels to any realistic dimension. He does a marvelous job with our special material called Galvalume, but he can also do aluminum and even copper! This incredible guy is the reason why there are no horizontal seams in metal roofing, thus he’s to thank for the unified look and long-term durability. But that’s not all. The Metal Man… is mobile and can go onsite to produce panels up to 50 feet long!

That’s right. We’ll bring him to your house behind one of our trucks to custom-fit any part of your roof. Just want some dormers done? Okay. Maybe just a section over the front door? Sure. How about a low-sloping roof where shingle and rubber just don’t cut it? Absolutely! The Metal Man is talented, and so are his friends: the installation experts at Global Home Improvement.

Here’s the other thing. Rather than take several trips back and forth with heavy asphalt shingles, we only have to make one trip with The Metal Man. He is patient and doesn’t drink too much gasoline, which saves our atmosphere and environment (hey, Metal Man has to live on this earth too).

If you’re interested in actually meeting this devilish-looking dude with a helpful heart, get in touch with us soon at 888-234-2929. He’s actually quite charming in person, see for yourself!!

Galvalume Roofing: Places First, Wins Green Metal

What exactly is Galvalume, besides what a metal roof is made of? According to the website (www.galvalume.com), Galvalume sheet steel is a 55% Al-Zn coated sheet steel product.

Hmm… okay. What does that even mean?

It means Galvalume is basically sheet steel coated with 55% aluminum and 45% zinc alloy. This makes it durable and ensures it will not corrode for the life of the product. This magical combination of aluminum and zinc has been displacing corrugated metal roofing for years.

It’s also a bit more high-tech than standard metal roofs of yore. According to steelroofing.com;

Both Galvalume and galvanized sheet steels are made by a “continuous hot dip” process. Coils of cold rolled steel are welded end-to-end and processed continuously on the coating line at speeds up to 600 feet per minute. The uncoiled sheet is first cleaned to remove rolling oils and mill dirt, and to reduce surface oxides so that the surface will accept the coating. These continuous sheets are first fed into a molten coating bath contained in an open top, brick-lined heated pot. The sheet then passes around a roller submerged in the coating bath and exits the bath vertically, pulling out with it an envelope of the coating material. As it exits, the sheet proceeds through a pair of opposing air knives, which are positioned above the bath and equidistant from the surface of the sheet. Most modern production lines have a coating thickness gauge feed-back control, which automatically adjusts knife air pressure and position to ensure that a uniform coating is applied. Various finishing steps are carried out to complete the process, after which the sheet is wrapped around a reel into a coated steel coil.

Got that? Even if you don’t understand all the nuances of Galvalume production, you can still rest assured that the reasoning behind the manufacturing process is there to ensure production of the best roofing material possible. Lets go back to steelroofing.com;

Galvalume sheet is an ideal material for roofing because of its extraordinary outdoor corrosion resistance and subsequent long life. It can be readily roll-formed into a variety of panels, as well as formed and stamped into tile and shingle facsimiles. It can also be factory painted to impart color and extend durability (see color chart here)! Most importantly, it can be used in modern day steel roof designs which are strong, yet light weight. And unlike conventional nonmetallic roof systems, Galvalume sheet roofs won’t crack and peel when subjected to the sun’s rays and various weather conditions.
